Explanation of the Entrance Examination System

To apply to the department, you should have met all of the following requirements:

1. You should be 18 years of age or older by April 1st, 2014 ( For September admission, by September 1st, 2014). You should have already graduated from high school or expect to graduate by March 2014 (For September admission, by August 2014). This requirement can be met in one of three ways:
   1. (1) You have graduated from high school.
   2. (2) You are considered to have completed twelve years of a regular school curriculum.
   3. (3) You are considered to have attained an educational ability equal or superior to high-school graduates.
2. This department should be your first choice for further education. You are able to make a definite commitment to enter the department.
3. You can demonstrate a satisfactory ability in English by one of the following:
   1. a. You have received a TOEFL® iBT score of 70 points or higher (TOEFL® PBT score of 525 points or higher).
   2. b. You have received an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher (Academic Module only).
   3. c. You have received a TOEIC® score of 700 points or higher.
   4. d. You are a native speaker of English.

1. Application form.
   You must complete the form designated by the university. …The form will be on the net by the beginning of August, 2013. …Click here
2. Documentation required as proof of high school education.
   As evidence of 1.(1) to (3) above in "Requirements for Application", submit a transcript of grades (educational certification) and a certificate of completion of studies (certificate of anticipated completion of studies).
   NOTE: Only official documents issued by your school or other educational authorities can be accepted. The documents should be originals in a sealed, unopened envelope. Photocopies are not acceptable. Documents must be issued within three months before the application date if you are in the case of 2.(2) or 2.(3) above in "Requirements of Application."
3. Educational certification
   If possible, submit evidence of the following as educational certification:
   1. (1) SAT Reasoning Test (SAT I), SAT Subject Tests (SAT II)
   2. (2) Advanced level GCE or GCSE
   3. (3) Baccalaureat
   4. (4) IB Full Diploma
   5. (5) Abitur
   6. (6) Another form of educational certification equivalent to those listed above.
      NOTE: These certificates must be originals or certified true copies made by your school or embassy, or by a public notary in Japan.
4. Personal Statement.
   The personal statement should be written in English. There are no restrictions as to format or length. It should be sent together with this application.
5. Two Letters of Recommendation.
   One letter should be written by a teacher at your high school. The second letter of recommendation can be written by any person chosen by you. (The letters can be written in English or Japanese. Letters in other languages should be accompanied by a translation into English or Japanese.)
6. English test results: Proof of ability in English
   See “Requirements for Application” 3.
   a. Submit the “Examinee Score Record” for TOEFL® iBT or TOEFL® PBT.
   b. Submit the “Test Report Form” for IELTS.
   c. Submit the “Official Score Certificate” for TOEIC® .
   NOTE: Only originals, not photocopies, are accepted in the case of IELTS “Test Report Form” and the TOEIC® “Official Score Certificates. A photocopy is acceptable in the case of the “Examinee Score Record” for TOEFL® iBT or TOEFL® PBT.
   d. Those who are native speakers of English should submit one of the documents listed in the section 3, "Educational Certification" above in "Application Documents".
7. Passport copy
   The pages with your name and photo.
8. 2 photos
   Attach one on the application form and enclose another in the envelope.
9. Copy of Application for Remittance
   Attach the copy of your Application of Remittance (gaikoku sokin iraisho ) to your application form with a paper clip

Applicants will be chosen on the basis of documents submitted. There is no written examination or interview.

To apply to the department, you must meet all of requirements 1, 2, and 3:

1. You meet one of the following requirements or will do so by March 2014 (For September admission, by August 2014).
   1. (1) You have graduated from high school.
   2. (2) You have completed twelve years of a regular school curriculum.

2. The Department of Global and Transcultural Studies should be your first choice. You are able to make a definite commitment to enter the department.
3. You can demonstrate a satisfactory ability in English by one of the following:
   1. (a.) You have passed pre-1 grade or higher in the EIKEN examination (実用英語技能検定試験　準1級以上).
   2. (b.) You have received a TOEIC® score of 600 points or higher.
   3. (c.) You have received a “GTEC for STUDENTS” score of 650 points or higher.
   4. (d.) You have received a TOEFL® iBT score of 54 points or higher (TOEFL® PBT score of 480 points or higher).
   5. (e.) You were enrolled for four years or more without interruption in a middle school (junior high school) or high school where English was the medium of education.

NOTE: Applicants for the AO (B) examination must be able to take the examination in Tokyo on November 17, 2013. The application procedures must be completed in Japan, either by applicants themselves, or by a someone acting for them. However, there is no requirement that examinees should be resident in Japan at the time of application. There is no restriction as to national origin or citizenship of those applying.

5. English test results: Proof of ability in English

   a. Submit the certificate issued by the EIKEN testing authorities showing your EIKEN examination results.
   b. Submit the original “Official Score Certificate” showing your TOEIC® score. (A photocopy is not accepted.)
   c. Submit the score report of the “GTEC for STUDENTS.” (A photocopy is acceptable.)
   d. Submit the “Examinee Score Report” of your TOEFL® iBT score. (A photocopy is acceptable.)
   e. Submit a graduation certificate or grade transcript that clearly indicates the period that you were enrolled in a middle school (junior high school) or high school where English was the medium of education. (Photocopies not accepted.)

[1] Written Examination (2 hours). The examination consists of three sections.

1. Read a passage in English. The passage is between 600-1000 words in length. Write a summary in English or Japanese of the main points in the passage. Your summary should be between 100 and 200 words in length. If writing in Japanese, your summary should be between 200 and 400 characters in length.
2. Respond to the issues in the passage in section (1) by giving your opinion in English. Your response should be between 300 and 500 words in length.
3. Select one essay topic from the three choices. Discuss the topic in English . Use the space provided for your answer.

To apply to the department, you must meet all of requirements for 1 and 2:

1. You must meet one of the following requirements:
   1. (1) You completed your second year at another university, and received the prescribed number of credits.
   2. (2) You expect to complete your second year at another university and will receive the prescribed credits by March, 2014 ( For September admission, by August, 2014).
   3. (3) You have graduated or expect to graduate from another university, a two-year college, or a technical college.
   4. (4) You have graduated or you expect to graduate from Meiji Gakuin University by March, 2014 ( For September admission, by August, 2014).
2. You can demonstrate a satisfactory ability in English by one of the following:
   1. (a.) You have received a TOEFL® iBT score of 76 or higher (PBT score of 540 or higher).
   2. (b.) You have received a TOEIC® score of 710 or higher.
   3. (c.) You have received an IELTS (Academic Module only) score of 5.5 or higher.
   4. (d.) You are a native speaker of English.

NOTE: If you have or expect to graduate from a university or two-year college outside Japan, your application documents will be reviewed to determine your eligibility. If you are deemed ineligible, your application fee will be returned.

Written exam held from 10:00-12:00 (120 minutes). The question relates to international issues. The written response may be in English or Japanese.
