Take Yourself Across the World

The rapidly advancing globalization of society is dramatically altering the international landscape. At the Department of Global and Transcultural Studies, we aim to nurture individuals who can meet the challenges of today’s world and excel in the international society of the future. For this purpose, we develop a high level of English-based cross-cultural communication ability, we give the student an interdisciplinary approach to accurately understanding contemporary society, and we develop the student’s ability to independently participate in, and make a contribution to, efforts to solve a variety of problems.

Curriculum overview

In the Department of Global and Transcultural Studies, we aim to develop the student’s ability to comprehensively understand the diverse problems of global society from political, economic, and cultural perspectives. At the same time, we develop individuals who can communicate in multiple languages, who can work together with people living in many different environments, and who can display leadership.

Courses are classified into a number of different categories: the Academic English Program (AEP), lecture courses, internships and study abroad, and graduation research. Almost all courses are held in English, and they are classified as Lower Module or Upper Module depending on the content level. Consulting with an academic advisor, students select the lecture courses that are a match for their individual goals.

In courses, extensive use is made of small classes that feature a methodology based on two-way communication between student and instructor. In addition, all students are provided with substantive international experience through a multifaceted system of overseas studies, an internship system, a field studies system, and a double degree program. Beginning with guidance in the first year, students take basic courses in life and career guidance and life and career design, and our curriculum places strong emphasis on ensuring that students are fully aware of their post-graduation career possibilities and think about what they need to do to prepare for a career.
