In the Faculty of Letters, we pursue the fundamental questions of “What is a human being?” and “What should a human being strive to become?” To do this, our students acquire basic and specialized knowledge and practical skills, and they gain understanding as well as verbal and written linguistic skills encompassing diverse aspects of language, literature, art, and culture. Through these studies, we aim to nurture individuality and the student’s ability to make a contribution to society while keeping up with the diversity and change of our world.
The Faculty of Letters comprises three departments. The Department of English has students study not only English literature and culture, but also approach the English language itself through linguistic methods. The Department of French Literature polishes sensitivity to French literature and language while expanding the student’s exposure to every facet of culture and life from the standpoint of “Modernité” (Modernism). The Department of Art Studies conducts wide-ranging research into music, art, and film, as well as artistic media in general.
Each department has its own policy, curriculum, and facilities, and their diverse research activities transcend specific fields to reach beyond the bounds of what the department name suggests. Valuing and respecting flexible thinking and ideas, we cultivate an approach that widens horizons through interest in language, art, and culture.
