BUN refer to things that can be written and described using words,
but it also covers language, literature, art, all aspects of culture, theories and history, religion and education—in fact, every kind of human expression.
Politics, society and economics, architecture, sculpture, even skydiving—all activities that are part of human expression. The Faculty of Literature considers all these as legitimate subjects of research The Faculty of Literature considers all these as legitimate subjects of research because to express oneself is an uniquely human trait and to study those traits is to seek the answer to the question of what it means to be human.
Human beings have always used language, drawing and other forms of expression to objectify nature, life, death, and relationships. It is this which tells us, perhaps better than any historical chronicle, how humans grasped the world, how they chose to leave their footprints, how they created and destroyed. The Faculty of Literature delves deeply into these kind of issues—looking at expressions of humanity to understand humanity.
As you can imagine, the Faculty of Literature is an interesting place. Students can choose any language, literature or art to research, be it culture, history, theologians or religion, society, customs, fashion or advertising—no research topic is out of the question. All areas of human expression are valid and related to one another, so they can be researched individually or combined.
Through these studies, the Faculty of Literature’s aim is to answer the fundamental question,
“What is it to be human?”
To live meaningfully in our society, it is beneficial to learn how to express oneself and to relate one’s view of the world, as well as to study the fundamentals and methods of communication.
Using what one learns about how humans have handled the realities of life (realities both given and forced) from researching and studying in the Faculty of Literature, one can examine how one has lived to this point, how one is living now, and how one should live from this point on. To keep thinking about these things is what it really means to “do something useful” with oneself.
At our university, there are three courses in the Faculty of Literature, each with its own policies, curriculum and facilities. The activities go far beyond what might be assumed by looking only at the name of the department.
The English Literature department researches not only the literature and culture of the English-speaking areas of the world, but also the English language itself from a linguistic point of view. The French Literature Department looks at various areas of culture and life from the modernite (modern) point of view.
The Art department covers not only music, art and visual media, but also overall research of the entire media.
