Faculty of Sociology & Social Work

Nurturing broad-minded individuals able to contribute to the building of an ideal society.

The Faculty of Sociology & Social Work has, from the beginning, endeavored to nurture individuals who will serve as a moving force for the improvement of society. Contemporary society needs people who have a good understanding of “the other” and who have the flexibility and diversity of perspective that is developed by learning from the reality in which “the other” lives. Furthermore, it needs people with the thinking ability to grasp the core of a problem and with the imagination and practical skill to create new possibilities for society. By developing in our students deep insight and tolerance with respect to both “the other” and “the self,” we pursue the educational goal of nurturing people who will enthusiastically put their ideas into practice and who will contribute to the formation of a society that respects and supports character and individuality.

The Faculty of Sociology & Social Work comprises two departments: the Department of Sociology and the Department of Social Work. The Department of Sociology develops the student’s ability to solve problems by approaching and analyzing a wide variety of “societies” (family, school, company, community, international society, etc.) from a multifaceted perspective. Through the learning of basic and specialized knowledge and the practical skills of social welfare, the Department of Social Work develops the student’s ability to guide people to solutions for the various problems they face in their lives in society. In fieldwork and practical training, students further deepen their learning through communication with “the other” in society, and they develop the capacity to support “the other” in real-world situations.
