Major of Social Work

Original Site

Students of Social Work Major can gain knowledge and practical skills that are essential for succeeding as highly qualified specialists and independent researchers.

The Social Work Major boasts a history of nearly 50 years that began when it was first established within the department of Arts and Letters. At the beginning of the 21st century, the Social Work Major is reforming its curriculum in order to meet fully the wide-ranging needs in Japan’s social welfare field.

Our Master’s Course offers classes on a broad range of subjects. The curriculum, which emphasizes social work including practical training and research, helps students develop skills they need to succeed in the actual workplace.

Our Doctoral Course focuses on fostering the ability to conduct research independently and to help gain superior specialized and practical skills.

We are part of a credit-exchange program, which allows students to receive credit for classes at any of the 12 graduate schools in Tokyo that offer a master’s degree in social work. We provide entrance exams for our Master’s Course twice a year, in the fall and spring. We also have a system to accept shakaijin (working professionals). Through our “recurrent education system” adopted for both Master’s and Doctoral Courses, we accept a wide variety of students.

As our Master’s Course maintains a close connection with education and research institutions as well as other social-work organizations, our students have a wide spectrum of employment opportunities in both public and private sectors from which to choose.
