Message from the President

Welcome to Meiji Gakuin University’s English Home Page. As president of Meiji Gakuin University, I would like to introduce our university to you.

Meiji Gakuin is widely acknowledged to be the oldest Christian school in Japan. At the end of the Edo era, American medical missionary, James Curtis Hepburn (1815-1911) and his wife Clara opened the Hepburn Juku for the Japanese in 1863. Today, that small school has grown to become a university of over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students with campuses in both Tokyo and Yokohama, consisting of six faculties, ten fields of study at the graduate level, and a law school.

Our educational principle is “Do for Others.” This expression comes from the Golden Rule, “Do for others what you want them to do for you” (Matthew 7:12), and from our founder’s contribution to the Japanese society. As a medical missionary, Dr. Hepburn provided free and equal health care to all people, regardless of their social class, gender, or nationality. He also edited the first extensive Japanese-English Dictionary, and translated the Bible into Japanese. These contributions to the Japanese people sum up Dr. Hepburn’s ideal to “Do for Others.” Meiji Gakuin University strives to nurture individuals under this educational principle.

Moreover, we have endeavored to create an educational institution that strives to produce world leaders dedicated to the service of others, using our three special centers: our Volunteer Center, our Center of International Cooperation in Education and our Career Center.

We would very much like to see you on our campus in the future. Come join our “Do for Others”spirit.

Dr. Haruki ONISHI
President of Meiji Gakuin University
