FUTON
A FUTON is Japanese-style bedding. During the night, the bedding is laid out on the tatami mats or floor. During the day, the bedding is folded and placed in the closet. On dry days, futons are often exposed to sunlight and air to keep them fresh and dry. You airing and putting the futons away each morning is also a matter of hygiene, keeping the bedding from becoming damp and unhealthy.
COMMON SPACE- YOUR COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY
KUGAHARA DORM HAS A COMMON ROOM ON THE 2ND FLOOR OF KUGAHARA B WITH ONE TELEVISION, A PUBLIC PHONE, TWO VACUUM CLEANERS, SOME TOASTER-OVENS, SOME RICE COOKERS AND GARBAGE BOXES. THESE ITEMS ARE FOR EVERYONE'S USE IN YOUR BUILDING; PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS.
The common room is unlocked by the dorm keepers at 7:00 am and then locked at 11:00 pm every day. If you like to use an iron, ask the dorm keepers to lend it. Please return it to the dorm keepers soon after you use.
As with your own dorm, care, cleaning, and upkeep of your room and the common room is each student's responsibility. At the end of the program, the common space household should be as you found it. Please read the rental agreement carefully. A copy of the agreement is contained on the last page of this section.
LIVING IN A JAPANESE DWELLING
The following are a few observations about Japanese houses and apartments. The entrance to MISH, as with most every Japanese home, contains a genkan, a sort of entry vestibule. Here, in the genkan, you should remove your shoes. Shoes are not worn in the apartment and the genkan is the only place in a Japanese home where shoes are worn.
In tatami mat rooms, no inside slippers as worn as the mats are intended to be walked on in bare feet or sox. Take off your slippers when you come into your own room at MISH. Tatami is a reed-like mat about three-feet by six-feet in dimension and about two and a half to three inches thick. The interior of the mat is a layer of bundled straw and tatami to keep it fresh, unworn, and clean. There are important considerations for the place where one sleeps and lounges. Tatami is somewhat fragile.
GARBAGE
The pickup spots will be shown by the dorm keepers during orientation. The pickup time is around eight o'clock in the morning. Please do not put garbage out the day before as birds and wild animals break into the packages and scatter the contents. Garbage should be in bags, which are tied with a strap or string. Please be good neighbors. As for Kugahara residents, please follow the dormitory rules.

HEALTH PROBLEMS / PRECAUTION
Gastrointestinal disorders, sore throats, and colds often occur more frequently in a foreign country than at home, particularly soon after your arrival.
