Session 28 Participants: Genji monogatari poses a challenge to each generation of specialists in Japanese literature and culture. To what extent is the meaning of the text retrievable to readers at a distance of one thousand years? How well is the narrative understood today? Are we doing the work justice in our research and teaching? The members of the roundtable will address these and other questions, discussing recent approaches to the Genji monogatari and its place in Japanese studies.
