Spring language schedule
Fall language schedule
- Global Studies (spring) and Global Security and Development Studies (winter) are semester-long academic programs offered by the Faculty of International Studies, Meiji Gakuin University, Yokohama, Japan. Subjects include politics and security, comparative politics, economic themes, peace and conflict, development and environment, Japanese culture and society--all in an Asian perspective. Curriculum is in English. Prior coursework in Japanese is not required, but Japanese language study is available and is strongly recommended. The program includes travel arrangements, field trips, and a housing subsidy. The program begins in April (spring semester) and September (fall semester) each year. The university academic year begins in April. (Check with UC-EAP for application deadlines.)
- Students are encouraged to take courses in the following three broad categories: economic development/political economy; international relations and politics; and culture--in addition to language study.
- Besides these areas, an Integrative Seminar with an independent study component is required. (Integrative refers to the integration of materials covered in other classes, daily living experiences, field trips, Japanese life and society, etc.) UC students must also attend the academic field trips arranged both semesters, including a visit to Kyoto and Hiroshima. From time to time there may also be other short fieldtrips arranged by professors. Language study is strongly recommended for both semesters.
- The program is comprised of two independent semesters, one in spring (beginning in April) and one in fall (beginning in September). Students take a minimum of 21 UC quarter units, but most students take 24-27 UC quarter units.. The Integrative Seminar (3 quarter units) is compulsory. An approved independent study project and field work can be part of the total quarter units taken. The UC-EAP visiting professor will approve your selection of courses.
- Note: The Integrative Seminar must be taken for a letter grade; the P/NP grade option is not permitted.
- Shortly after your arrival, Meiji Gakuin University staff will provide an orientation to living in Japan. Staff will help you establish a bank account, get you registered with Japanese immigration authorities, provide an orientation to the community and to university life, etc. See example.
- Special Study Projects require a study proposal, agreement of a participating professor and the Meiji Gakuin/UC Program Committee, and finally, approval by UC-EAP.
- Students who are absent from more than one-third of course meetings are ineligible for course credit.
- The spring examination period is approximately from the middle of July to the end of the month. If your professor asks you to submit your paper to the Meiji Gakuin/UC office, staff will only accept the paper on the due date. The same rules apply to the fall semester. Check with your professors about the fall examination period.
- Meiji Gakuin course registration deadline is mid-April for the spring semester and early October for the fall semester. Please note, this Meiji Gakuin cut-off date may differ from the date set for UC registration, so verify dates with the UC study director.

- Independent study and field work requires professor's approval and UC-EAP review and approval. The units vary with each project, depending on the amount of time invested, the type of project, and the work done for evaluation--typically 2-3 UC quarter units. Please check with the UC-EAP advisor.
- Student Integration: All courses except Japanese language are open to students at Meiji Gakuin University. We strive to integrate our courses with foreign and Japanese students. Meiji Gakuin students and staff are also welcome and encouraged to attend most all outside speaker's presentations at the integrative seminar.
