Abstract
The leap from structured classroom practice to independent real-world listening is daunting for most learners. Teachers can help their students make this leap by linking sound principles with well-grounded methodology and engaging material. This means not only being aware of the effective top-down and bottom-up strategies employed by efficient listeners, but also providing students with a variety of high interest input, as well as accessible tasks that clearly target specific listening goals. With these essentials in place, learners steadily build their confidence so that they are then not only learning to listen but also listening to learn. This workshop will focus on sound principles and practical methods that offer teachers effective and lively ways to develop the listening skills the students need outside the classroom.
