Dear Listmembers,

The following books in Japanese, which would be useful for the
computerization of pmjs, have just been published:

Sema, Tanimoto, Oouchi and Okada,
DEN'NOU KOKUBUNGAKU: INTAANETTO DE HIROGARU KOTEN NO SEKAI
[Computerization for the Study of Japanese Literature: Internet
Expands the World of Classics].

Asian Text Processing], vol.1.

Subject: Iwanami nihonshi jiten

Readers of this list may be interested to know that the Iwanami _Nihon shi
jiten_ (general editor Nakahara Keiji) has just come out in a CD-ROM
version, a year to the day after the print publication (1814 pages).

19,000 main entries. 13,000 additional entries on persons and events.
Free key word search possible. ("Kototoi light" search software included.)
Data can be installed on hard disk for convenience and quick access.
Windows/Mac. ISBN 4-00-130128-8
Refreshingly, the 8500 yen price of the CD-ROM is less than that of the
print version (12,000 yen).

Subject: Premodern sources on CD ROM

Dear Michael and all List Member:

This is indeed good news. (How many of us are waiting, with baited breath,
for the CR ROM version of Koku-shi Daijiten?, or perhaps someday.... should
I say it?..... Dai Nihon Shiryo!!!???).

This announcement might be a good occasion for us to toss onto the "virtual
discussion table" any other introductions to good CD ROMs related to our
various fields (premodern lit. or history, etc.). Computer buff like me -
and I believe there are more than a hand full among us - love to keep
abreast of such things.

My sincere best wishes to you all,

Matthew Stavros

PS: is the plural of CD ROM, "CD ROMs"?

Thanks for passing on this useful information. And there it works on a Mac
too! Does anyone have any clever ideas on how we can order this from
overseas?

It's possible that it might be orderable from Kinokuniya Online; they have many
dictionaries and related things that *include* CD-ROMs, so it's possible that
CD-ROM dictionaries -- especially those put out by major publishers -- might be
orderable from them.

I'll be trying to order it later tonight from them myself.

Oh, Lord... can you imagine the latter with searchable text? Can my heart stand
the strain... <G>

I would dearly love to have a CD-ROM version of the Kokushi Daijiten... Heck,
I'd settle for old-fashioned paper.

Dear list members,
I'm not much attuned to computer CD-roms, but I believe there is a CD-rom
version of the invaluable HEIAN IBUN, with index.
Best,

HEIAN IBUN does in fact come on CD Rom. I'm not sure if they have a Mac
version but the text files (for the Windows version) can be transferred
into a word-processing document without a problem. This should be done with
a "light" application like Nisus or EG Word but not MS Word! Alas, the
mighty word-processing giant tends to choke on files this big. In any case,
get ready to jack up your alocated memory!

Good luck.

Some CD-ROMs of interest are introduced in Japanese at
http://www.kogakkan-u.ac.jp/users/fukatsu/cdrom.htm
This briefly describes CD-ROM of chokusenshu, Genji, etc. Also available is:
Azuma Kagami / Gyokuyo (Yoshikawa kobun)
$B!X8c...@...LMU!Y!...@...J84[!K(J58,000

Further to Matthew's comment on the HEIAN IBUN CD-ROM. Here is some more
information gleaned from the web (I have not seen or used it myself). It
contains all eleven volumes and allows full text searches. Edited by the
Tokyo University Shiryo Hensanjo and put out by Tokyodo Bookstore in Kanda
(no web site, tel/fax 03-3291-5181, 1-17 Kanda Jimbocho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo
101).

Windows only. 70,000 yen (university co-ops in Japan selling it at 59,000).

A search in Japanese on www.google.com will find comments by specialists
using it. An article introducing the CD-ROM can be found in
$B!XNr;K...@...JRekishi hyoron no. 578 (June 1998)

Technical requirements are for Pentium 75 mhz or better. 16mb+ memory,
4xspeed CD-ROM drive. Works with Windows 95 (and presumably later systems
although I'd check about that)

One CD-ROM which I don't think has been mentioned thus far and
which may be of interest to some list members is the Tendai Denshi
Butten $BE7BfEE;RJ)E5(B (3000 yen) published by the Tendaishuuten
Hensanjo. Their e-mail address (I haven't tried this myself yet and
would be interested in hearing from anyone who has whether the CD can
be ordered for shipment overseas) is LDY03...@...tyserve.or.jp
