Public Seminar
This talk traces the 70 year history of the electric power industry in Japan, and examines the relationship of energy development and political democracy. Using Fukushima Prefecture as a setting, it examines the different visions held of electric power projects by technicians, businessmen, bureaucrats, and local residents, highlighting both their imagined and real social impacts. The talk will cover the era of comprehensive dam development in the 1950s, nuclear power development in the 1970s, market liberalization in the 1990s, and the rise of community-based energy companies since the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster.
