The Tale of the Heike - section titles in English and Japanese

Section titles according to the Kakuichi version 覚一本 (Kakuichi-bon), derived from the text for recitation dictated by the biwa hōshi performer Akashi no Kakuichi 明石覚一 in 1371.
English titles: Helen McCullough, trans., The Tale of the Heike (Stanford UP, 1988).
Japanese titles: Takagi Ichinosuke et al., ed. Heike monogatari, NKBT 32-32 (Iwanami shoten, 1959-60). This page is in Unicode encoding (UTF-8). Macrons are used. [Note.]

The NKBT text principally used by McCullough for her translation is based on a manuscript at Ryūkoku University (Kyoto) [facsimile online]. Some recent editions of Heike monogatari are based on another important Kakuichi text, the so-called "Takano" manuscript held by Tokyo University. Significant differences in the section divisions and titles have been noted below. Modern Japanese forms of kanji are used throughout, except where editors prefer the older forms. For titles in romanized form, see kakuichiJM. Electronic texts of both manuscript versions are available online on the j-texts.com site in Shift-JIS encoding: [Ryūkoku version][Takano version]

Note: Unicode coding is used here, rather than one of the Japanese encoding methods, in order to permit macrons (ōŌū) marking vowel length to co-exist with Japanese characters. Unicode also permits the input and display of kanji not included in the usual Japanese character sets: tsujikaze (section 3.10), nue 鵼 (4.10), and 肋 in Genbō 玄肋 (7.19). Recent versions of operating systems and browsers may be required for these diacritics and Japanese characters to display correctly.
