Research
Humans are extremely sensitive socially sensitive animals that cannot remain indifferent to the well-being and condition of others, both positively (empathy and altruism) and negatively (jealousy, prejudice and discrimination). I want to understand the evolutionary and socio-ecological basis of this uniquely human 'high sociality' and how it is implemented in our 'mind'. Through collaboration with neighbouring fields such as neuroscience, biology, information science, economics, philosophy and ethics, I hope to map the wisdom of the humanities and social sciences regarding 'ideal behaviour and social images' with empirical findings from behavioural, brain and information sciences.
Possible graduation research topics
- Understanding group decision-making using game theory.
- Information ethics and its applications
- Cognitive/behavioural algorithms to support collective knowledge.
- Considering the origins of morality
Hobbies, skills and likes
Appreciation of music, painting and whisky
Message to candidates and students
I think it is very important to have broad interests beyond your field of specialisation. I myself have had many eye-opening experiences when I learnt about research in other fields that approach the same problem with completely different ideas and methods. I hope that the Centre for Interdisciplinary Information Science, which will be established together with the Faculty of Information Mathematics and Science, will serve as a point of contact and exchange with such different fields.
