In the spirit of “Do for Others” the Faculty of Psychology takes “research the mind and support the person” as its principle of education and the development of talented people with the ability to provide psychological support, which means support in facing the variety of different problems faced by many people in present-day society, as its educational objective. Our aim is to impart the fundamentals of psychology, and, through the study and practice of scientific methodology and related sciences, to instill the ability to analyze and understand behavior, upon which individuals continue to develop their abilities to understand and support others, in accordance with their own particular specialization and at the various stages of their lifelong development.

Policy on Conferral of Degrees (Diploma Policy)

  1. Indicating understanding and interest in terms of psychology or of education and child development regarding the various problems that people encounter in the global society of today, and possessing a stance of positive engagement with those problems.
  2. Having acquired a foundation in psychology and learned the scientific methods as well as the practical ability needed to understand the mechanisms of the human mind and spirit.
  3. Having acquired an ability to provide psychological support that enables understanding and support for others at every stage of lifelong development on the basis of self-understanding.
  4. Having acquired the ability, in the light of one’s own individuality, to address issues that arise in the course of career development.

  1. In order to instill an understanding of the significance of “research the mind and support the person” as the educational principle of the Faculty of Psychology, and to develop a stance of active engagement with the various different problems presented by society today, cultivate the abilities to understand the self, to understand others, to understand relationships, and to solve problems.
  2. Acquire the methodologies of psychology and of education and child development by means of lectures, workshops, internships, seminars, and other such forms of instruction in pace with the progression through the years of education, cultivating a rich and varied humanity and the ability to apply it in practice.

Admission Policy
Applicants for admission to the Faculty of Psychology are expected to understand the significance of “research the mind and support the person” as well as to:

  1. Possess the motivation to pursue the heart and mind in a scientific manner.
  2. Have an interest in and concern for the creation of better human relationships and a better society.

Based upon the theme of “research the mind and support the person” adopted by the Faculty of Psychology, the Department of Psychology describes its educational objective as being to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in psychological methodology and in the individual’s own areas of interest. On that basis, and in light of self-understanding, our aim is to cultivate a rich and varied humanity and a broad perspective by means of relationships with others, and to develop an active stance of engagement with the various issues of present-day society.

  1. Degree candidates will have acquired the methodology of psychology as well as specialized knowledge and skills in the individual’s own areas of interest.
  2. They will have cultivated a rich and varied humanity and a broad perspective by means of relationships with others, and will have developed an active stance of engagement with the various issues of present-day society.

Academic Program Organization and Implementation Policy (Curriculum Policy)

  1. In order to instill an understanding of the significance of the educational principle expressed by the Faculty of Psychology as “research the mind and support the person” and to cultivate a stance of active engagement with the varied problems presented by society today, our curriculum will, with psychology as its foundation, cultivate the abilities to understand the self, to understand others, to understand relationships, and to solve problems.
  2. Taking the methodology of psychology as a foundation, the curriculum will arrange for a variety of lectures, seminars, experimental workshops, and other such courses that instill specialized knowledge and skills concerning the many different areas of psychology, and it will provide a phased, systematic education from the first year on. Seminar courses will also be arranged throughout the four-year period in order to provide a finely detailed education conducted in small groups. Specialized learning based on foreign language literature will also be included.
    • First year: Acquisition of fundamental academic literacy together with study of basic knowledge and skills relating to psychology
    • Second year: Establish fundamental literacy and understanding of psychology by participatory and experiential learning
    • Second to third year: Study of core portions of psychology (experimental workshops, acquisition of knowledge on various areas of psychology, study of psychology in foreign language literature)
    • Third to fourth year: Deepen specialized learning by seminars and specialized courses (lectures, experimental workshops), practice of psychology methodology (graduation research)
  3. Meiji Gakuin core courses, Department of Psychology courses, and courses in other departments are arranged to cultivate a rich and varied humanity and a broad perspective.

Department of Education and Child Development

Educational Objectives and Human Resource Development Objectives

Based upon the theme of “research the mind and support the person” adopted by the Faculty of Psychology, the Department of Education and Child Development describes its educational objective as being to develop talented people who have practical skills in education from the perspective of education and child development and who have the ability to provide support to developing children. Education and child development is founded upon an understanding of the mechanisms of child development and disabilities. On that foundation, it is a field of learning that fuses pedagogy, psychology, and disability science to conduct an analytical and scientific examination of the desired modalities of systematic educational systems. In this department, therefore, we aim to acquire advanced practical skills in education together with the ability to provide support to developing children in the contexts of school education and lifelong education, while also taking the whole life of the person into consideration, situating the field of education and child development as the foundation, benefiting from experiences and activities in a variety of different real-life situations, learning by actual practice about contact points with schools in lifelong development, and studying the principles and methods of education that can appropriately address psychological issues in which present-day children are involved.

We situate education and child development as the foundation for training talented people who are able to address the psychological issues in which present-day children are involved, who have become aware of the issues they face individually in dealing appropriately with children and their guardians, and who are able to continue learning independently.

  1. Degree candidates will have acquired the ability to provide psychological support, which consists of the ability to understand oneself, the ability to control oneself, the ability to understand others, the ability to form relationships, and the ability to support others.
  2. Degree candidates will possess adequate knowledge concerning lifelong development processes and disabilities, and will have developed the ability to put that knowledge to use in supporting children.
  3. Degree candidates will have come to a practical understanding of contact points with schools in lifelong development, and will have acquired the ability to examine effective educational methods in an analytical and scientific manner as well as the abilities to coordinate and to provide guidance in school courses.
  4. Degree candidates will recognize the matters that should be studied in order to deal appropriately with children and their guardians, and will have developed a stance of continuing independent learning.

Academic Program Organization and Implementation Policy (Curriculum Policy)

Based on the diploma policy, the curriculum policy consists of the following four points.

  1. The department core courses are situated as the core of our curriculum in order to foster the ability to provide psychological support, which consists of the ability to understand oneself, the ability to control oneself, the ability to understand others, the ability to form relationships, and the ability to support others.
  2. Implement a cyclical education system that places an emphasis on experiences and activities in real-life situations off-campus, in conjunction with educational programs within the university, to instill the ability to provide psychological support, the ability to provide support to developing children, and practical skills in education.
  3. The psychology course cluster and the disability science course cluster are arranged in order to develop the ability to provide psychological support and the ability to provide support to developing children.
  4. The pedagogy (elementary education) course cluster and the disability science course cluster are arranged in order to develop practical skills in education.

Admission Policy

The admission policy of the Department of Education and Child Development consists of the following three points, and it is the policy to accept applicants who strongly desire to study in this department and who possess a variety of different qualifications.

  1. They will feel strongly concerned about understanding and supporting children’s minds and hearts.
  2. They will strongly desire to become teachers at elementary schools, kindergartens, or schools for special needs education.
  3. They will have volunteer work, exchange student, or other such experience, and will feel interested in and concerned about communication with a variety of different people.
