Worried at first, but surprisingly fulfilled now
オンライン授業への不安が解け、安心して進めています

The lecture I introduce is Associate Professor Vesey’s “Modern East Asian History”. He holds the class via Microsoft’s Teams. This lecture mainly studies modern East Asian history from the perspectives of culture, social studies and politics. The goal is to gain a general understanding of modern East Asian history and to consider how this historical background influences the relationships between Japan, China, and South Korea today.

At first, I was quite worried about taking lectures online. However, it is surprisingly fulfilling. The class is small, and Associate Professor Vesey allows students to actively speak . So it is easy to ask questions, and the lecture is lively. That is why I do not feel the disadvantages of being online. Besides, thanks to not having to go to campus, I can use that time for other things. The benefits of this format is that it helped me to balance my studies and other activities.

Of course, I think it is better to reopen campus and resume in-person lectures. But I would like to maximize the benefits of that we have gained so far by doing it online.

僕が紹介する講義はVesey先生の「Modern East Asian History」です。この講義はMicrosoftのTeamsで行われています。この講義では主に近代の東アジア史を文化的、社会的かつ政治的観点から研究します。近代東アジア史についての一般的な知識を得るとともに、今日の日中韓3カ国の関係に歴史的背景がどのように影響しているかを考察することが目標です。

最初は正直オンラインでの授業をすることに対してかなり不安でした。しかし、オンライン授業を実際に受けてみて思ったことは意外と充実しているということです。この講義は少人数であり、Vesey先生は学生が発言する機会を積極的に与えてくれています。なので、質問もしやすく授業も活発な雰囲気です。むしろ通学が必要なくなったおかげで、その時間をほかのことに使えるのでより充実していると思います。

対面での授業に戻りたい気持ちももちろんありますが、オンラインで受ける以上はそのメリットを最大限に活かしてやっていきたいと思います。

オンライン授業になって部屋でパソコンを見ている時間が増えたので、何か気分転換にと観葉植物を買いました。これがあるだけでかなりリラックスできる気がします。

The spread of COVID 19 has certainly had a strong impact on college life this year, and we have had to carefully rethink our teaching and study methods here at Meigaku. Happily, students and faculty have generally learned to adapt to these unusual conditions. Overall, the spring semester classes went better than we first thought in April, and thanks to comments that students shared with us via in class questionnaires, we are overcoming challenges to improve the learning experience. As we prepare for the fall semester, I hope that students stay healthy and keep up their spirits.

新型コロナウイルスの蔓延は今年度の大学生活に強い影響を与え、明学では教員も学生も教え方と学び方を慎重に考え直す必要がありました。幸い、私たちはこの大変な状況を乗り越えつつあり、4月の時点での想定より、春学期の授業は大きな困難なく開講できたと思います。学生が授業時に答えてくれたアンケートを参考に、春学期に発生した課題を乗り越え、学部の教育をさらに改善したいと考えています。秋学期に向けて、学生の皆さんが身体も心も元気でいてくれることを願っています。
