In the lecture, Professor Iwanaga described the growth of urban areas and the social and economic challenges that Japan faces as it takes on the processes of globalization and decentralization. Afterwards, he took part in a discussion with the faculty and students on how Japan’s experiences could be applied to social and economic issues in Ukraine. The lecture was conducted in English, supplemented in German, and interpreted into Ukrainian.
On October 18, Professor Iwanaga conducted a seminar titled “Civil Society and Globalization” for staff in the Faculty of Sociology at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, where he is serving as an invited professor through October 31. On October 20, he gave a special lecture to graduate students titled “Hexis, or on the Urban Milieu as a Structured Form of Bodily Habitus: A Methodological Question,”(modified on the day from Urban Milieu as a Structured Form of Bodily Habitus: A Methodological problem) and on October 25, he gave a special lecture to undergraduates titled “On a New Globalized Cultural Tendency in Japan.”
In November, Professor Iwanaga will take part in a joint research project at the University of Lviv on the socio-environmental conditions of cities and village communities in Western Ukraine.
