Tenured Position in Transcultural Studies

RECRUITMENT NOTICE

【Position and Rank】
 One full-time (tenured) position with the rank of Associate Professor or Junior Associate Professor.

【Starting Date】
 April 1st, 2022 or September 1st, 2022

【Compensation】
 As per Meiji Gakuin rules, in addition to the salary, the university provides a pension plan and allowances for
   specific needs and administrative duties.

【Duties and Teaching Responsibilities】
 The successful candidate will be asked to teach a Lower Division course entitled “Transcultural Studies” in English.
   The selected candidate will also be expected to teach Upper Division courses related to the field of Transcultural
   Studies (such as Japanese Popular Culture, Visual Media Methods) and a few other lecture courses and seminars offered
   by the department, based on their field of specialization in the area of transcultural studies. Scholars who can lecture
   on the role and impact of mass media in Asian transcultural exchanges are particularly welcome to apply.
   The GTS Department’s curriculum is conducted entirely in English. It seeks a candidate who has the teaching skills and
   dedication to effectively instruct students in small class settings, including students whose secondary education
   was not centered on an English curriculum.

【Qualifications】
 The candidate must have a Ph.D. or have attained an equivalent record of achievement and ability.
   The position is open to any applicant regardless of their nationality or their first (native) language,
   but candidates should have a high level of English proficiency in order to fulfill their teaching duties.
   They also should have a sufficient level of Japanese proficiency for routine administrative tasks.
   The initial teaching load will consist of only of courses conducted in English, but the successful candidate
   will be expected to teach in Japanese in the future.

 (1) Curriculum Vitae.*
   (2) List of publications.* (On the list, indicate your most significant publication with a ◎ mark by the title.
        Indicate two other important publications with a 〇 mark). Include summaries for the three works indicated.
        For works published in English, provide a 1,000-character summary in Japanese. For works published in Japanese
        or any other language, provide a 500-word summary in English. Applicants may be asked to submit copies of
        publications at a later stage.
   (3) A personal statement on your suitability for the position and your teaching and research aspirations
        (1,000 words in English). Include an explanation of your proposed upper-division class.
   (4) Two syllabi in English: One for the “Transcultural Studies” course. The other should be for an Upper Division class
       (Japanese Popular Culture, Visual Media Methods, etc.). Meiji Gakuin’s class periods are 90 minutes long.
       “Transcultural Studies” meets 15 times a semester, while the Upper Division class meets 30 times a semester.
   (5) Names and contact information of two academic referees who are familiar with the candidate’s academic
         skills and abilities.

        Format the other documents for A4 or letter sized paper. Use the Western calendar for all dates.

【Selection Process】
  1. The first review round will be completed by July 2021. Candidates who are placed on the shortlist 
        will be asked to submit copies of their three most important publications.
    2. The second review based on the publications will be in August-September.
    3. Candidates selected for the third round will be asked to come for an interview and a demonstration lecture 
        on either September 18 (Sat.) or September 25 (Sat.) 2021.
        * Interviews will be conducted on the Meiji Gakuin’s Yokohama Campus. In accordance with university regulations, 
        the university will reimburse the candidates’ travel expenses. Depending on the spread of the COVID-19, 
        these interviews may be held online.
