The Department of Global and Transcultural Studies (GTS) offers several application methods. You should select the format and test timeframe that allows you to best display your academic abilities and potential for intellectual development.

AO (A) - Spring & Fall: Special entrance examination (April & September admission)
US/UK style application package: information forms; student essay; two letters of recommendation; English language test scores, or evidence of very strong English language academic skills are required. Evaluation heavily weighs the applicant’s level of academic preparation; the quality of their essay; and the strength of the recommendations. All applicants will be interviewed via Skype. We will conduct the interview in English.

AO (B) - Spring & Fall: Domestic special entrance examination (April & September admission)
Two-part application process: 1. Applicants request an AO (B) application from the Meiji Gakuin Admissions Center, and submit the forms in September for evaluation; 2. Selected students have a written exam and interview on Meiji Gakuin’s Shirokane Campus in November. The application contains Japanese forms; applicants must be in Japan for the November examination. The written exam and interview may be done in English, but the directions at the test-site are given in Japanese.

The General Entrance Exam (in Japanese) Domestic entrance examination (April admission)
Students take a series of exams on Meiji Gakuin’s Shirokane Campus in February. One test covers English skills; other subject tests are administered in Japanese.
Transfer Student Admissions - Spring & Fall: International special entrance examination (April & September admission)

Requirements for Application
  1. You should be 18 years of age or older by April 1st, 2019 (for September admission, by September 1st, 2019) . You should have already graduated from high school or expect to graduate by March 2019 (for September admission, by August 2019) . This requirement can be met in one of three ways:
    • a.You have graduated from high school.
    • b.You are considered to have completed twelve years of a regular school curriculum.
    • c.You are considered to have attained an educational ability equal or superior to high-school graduates.
  2. This department should be your first choice for further education. You are able to make a definite commitment to enter the department.
  3. You can demonstrate a satisfactory ability in English by one of the following:
    • a.You have received a TOEFL iBT® score of 72 points or higher. (TOEFL PBT® or TOEFL ITP® is not acceptable)
    • b.You have received an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher (Academic Module only) .
    • c.You have received a TOEIC® (or TOEIC®(L&R)) score of 785 points or higher. (TOEIC® IP is not acceptable)
    • d.English is your primary language of communication.

    You must complete the form designated by the university.
  2. Documentation required as proof of high school education.
    As evidence of 1.a. to c. above in "Requirements for Application", submit a transcript of grades (educational certification) and a certificate of completion of studies (or certificate of anticipated completion of studies) .
    NOTE: Only official documents issued by your school or other educational authorities can be accepted. The documents should be originals in a sealed, unopened envelope. (Photocopies are not acceptable. Certified true copies made by your school or embassy are acceptable.) Documents must be issued within three months before the application date if you are expected to graduate from high school.
  3. Educational certification(Optional)
    If possible, submit evidence of the following as educational certification:
    • a.SAT Reasoning Test (SAT I) or SAT Subject Tests (SAT II)
    • b.ACT
    • c.Advanced level GCE or GCSE
    • d.Baccalauréat
    • e.IB Full Diploma ※IB Predicted Grade is not acceptable
    • f.Abitur
    • g.Another form of educational certification equivalent to those listed above.
      NOTE: These certificates must be originals or certified true copies made by your school or embassy, or by a public notary in Japan.
      If you ask for your scores to be sent directly to Meiji Gakuin, we suggest you reconfirm this with the testing institution prior to the start of our application period.
  4. Personal Statement.
    The personal statement should be written in English and 600-800 words long. There are no restrictions as to format.
  5. Two Letters of Recommendation.
    A teacher who has taught you during your last two years of high school should write one of the letters. You may select any person to write the second letter of recommendation.(The letters can be written in English or Japanese. Letters in other languages should be accompanied by a translation into English or Japanese.)
  6. English test results: Proof of ability in English
    See “Requirements for Application” 3.
    • a.Submit the “Test Taker(Examinee) Score Report” or "Official Score Report" for TOEFL iBT®.
    • b.Submit the “Test Report Form” for IELTS.
    • c.Submit the “Official Score Certificate” for TOEIC® (or TOEIC®(L&R)) .
      NOTE: Only originals, not photocopies, are accepted in the case of IELTS “Test Report Form” and the TOEIC® “Official Score Certificates. A photocopy is acceptable in the case of the “Test Taker(Examinee) Score Report” for TOEFL iBT®.
    • d.Applicants whose primary language is English should submit one of the documents listed above in "Educational Certification" in "Application Documents," section 3.
  7. Passport copy
    The pages with your name and photo.
  8. Two photos
    Attach one on the application form and enclose another in the envelope.
  9. Copy of Application for Remittance
    Attach the copy of your Application of Remittance (gaikoku sokin iraisho ) to your application form with a paper clip.
Selection Process Applicants will be selected on the basis of their application materials and their interview. We will inform you of the details of your Skype interview schedule via email.
No matter what the reason (including issues with your internet service), you will be counted as absent from the interview if you do not take it at the appointed time.
  • There is no system for provisional enrollment.

Requirements for Application
  1. You meet one of the following requirements or will do so by March 2019 (for September admission, by August 2019) .
    • a.You have graduated from high school.
    • b.You are considered to have completed twelve years of a regular school curriculum.
    • c.You are considered to have attained an educational ability equal or superior to high-school graduates.
    • d.You have or are expected to graduate from a school in Japan with an accredited IB program, and you have or are expected to receive an IB Full Diploma for which you took either English A: Literature or English A: Language and Literature.(You must have be 18 years old by April 1, 2019.)
  2. The Department of Global and Transcultural Studies should be your first choice. You are able to make a definite commitment to enter the department.
  3. You can demonstrate a satisfactory ability in English by one of the following.(Applicants who fulfill requirement 1.d are exempt.)
    • a.You have passed pre-1 grade or higher in the EIKEN examination (実用英語技能検定試験 準1級以上) .
    • b.You have received a TOEIC® (or TOEIC®(L&R)) score of 664 points or higher.
    • c.You have received a GTEC score of 1052 points or higher.
    • d.You have received a TOEFL iBT® score of 64 points or higher (TOEFL PBT® or TOEFL ITP® is not acceptable) .
    • e.You have received a TEAP total score of 270 points or higher.
    • f.You were enrolled for four years or more without interruption in a middle school (junior high school) or high school where English was the medium of education.

NOTE: Applicants for the AO (B) examination must be able to take the examination in Tokyo on November 18, 2018. The application procedures must be completed in Japan, either by applicants themselves, or by a person acting for them. However, there is no requirement that examinees should be resident in Japan at the time of application. There is no restriction as to national origin or citizenship of those applying.

Selection Process: Stage Two (Examination)
  1. Written Examination (2 hours) . The examination consists of three sections.
    • 1.Read a passage in English. The passage is between 600-1000 words in length. Write a summary in English or Japanese of the main points in the passage. Your summary should be between 100 and 200 words in length. If writing in Japanese, your summary should be between 200 and 400 characters in length.
    • 2.Respond to the issues in the passage in section (1) by giving your opinion in English. Your response should be between 300 and 500 words in length.
    • 3.Select one essay topic from the three choices, and write your response to the question in the space provided for your answer.
  2. Interview in English only.

  • There is no system for provisional enrollment.
