Shinichi Shigetomi, Dean,
Faculty of International Studies

The Faculty of International Studies was founded in 1986, the first faculty in Japan devoted to international studies. Ever since our founding, we have maintained an academic perspective that transcends the boundaries between culture, economics and politics to explore learning that aims for peaceful international relations. In recent years, with globalization proceeding apace, there is more borderless flow as people move back and forth across boundaries, and there is an even greater need for mutual understanding amongst people with different backgrounds. In addition to an extensive range of language courses, the Faculty of International Studies offers courses about not only Asia but also regions such as Europe, Africa, America and the Middle East. These courses foster a global mindset that facilitates coexistence and collaboration via an understanding of cultural and social diversity. The Faculty encourages extramural activities so that our students can also learn from the real world. We want students to learn things from seminar-related extramural practical work, internships in Japan and overseas, and programs to study abroad which will equip them to think for themselves about how essential international studies are for peacebuilding, and to take action accordingly.
