RECRUITMENT NOTICE Tenured Position in Anthropology, Department of Global and Transcultural Studies (GTS), Faculty of International Studies, Meiji Gakuin University - April 1st, 2027 or September 1st, 2027

Position and Rank: One full-time (tenured) position at the rank of Professor, Associate Professor, or Junior Associate Professor. 
Starting Date: April 1st, 2027 or September 1st, 2027 
Compensation: In accordance with Meiji Gakuin regulations, a university pension plan and various allowances are provided, including a year-end bonus, a family allowance, a housing allowance, allowances for administrative duties, and a retirement allowance.


Duties and Teaching Responsibilities: 
The successful candidate will be asked to teach the lower-division courses “Introduction to Anthropology” and “Introduction to Global and Transcultural Studies” in English. In addition, they will be expected to teach an upper-division course, “Japanese Minority Groups,” as well as other lecture courses in their area of specialization and seminar courses, including “Qualitative Methods.” Scholars who can lecture on comparative Asian and Japanese minority studies and diaspora studies are particularly encouraged to apply. The GTS Department’s curriculum is conducted entirely in English. The department seeks a candidate with the teaching skills and dedication to effectively instruct students in small class settings, including those whose secondary education was not centered on an English curriculum.

Qualifications:
(1)The candidate must have a Ph.D. or have an equivalent record of achievement and ability.
(2)The position is open to applicants of any nationality or first language, but candidates should have a high level of English proficiency to fulfill their teaching duties. They should also be able to perform routine administrative tasks in Japanese. 
(3)The initial teaching load will consist only of courses conducted in English; however, teaching in Japanese may also be required in the future.
(4)Applicants must be willing and able to play an active role in the management of the Faculty and the GTS Department.

Place of Employment: Meiji Gakuin University’s Yokohama Campus (Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture). When necessary, duties at the Shirokane Campus (Minato-ku, Tokyo) may be assigned.

Please include summaries of the three works indicated. For works published in English, provide a 1,000-character summary in Japanese. For works published in Japanese or any other language, provide a 500-word summary in English. 
(3)Three major research publications.
(4) A personal statement addressing your outlook and aspirations regarding future education and research (1,000 words in English or 2,400 characters in Japanese).
(5)Two syllabi in English: one for “Introduction to Anthropology” and one for “Japanese Minority Groups.” Class periods at Meiji Gakuin University are 100 minutes long. “Introduction to Anthropology” meets 14 times per semester, while “Japanese Minority Groups” meets 28 times per semester. 
(6)Names, affiliations, and contact information (email addresses) of two academic referees who are familiar with the candidate’s qualifications and abilities.

Please ensure that the envelope is clearly marked in red with “Application Documents for the Position in Anthropology” and sent by registered post. Selection Process: 
The initial screening will be based on the submitted curriculum vitae and list of publications. Candidates who pass the initial screening will proceed to a second-stage review. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by email by late August and invited to a campus interview and teaching demonstration on September 12 (Sat.), 2026.
* Interviews will be conducted at Meiji Gakuin University’s Yokohama Campus. In accordance with university regulations, only travel expenses will be reimbursed.

*The retirement age at this university is 68 for professors and 65 for associate professors and junior associate professors.
